of LZW and CRLI

okay i believe all of us have seen pictures using the CRLI (Consecutive Run Length Insertion) compression, but might not have known it was called that. Zeldman in his book Taking Your Talent to the Web mentions the following…

In 1995, when 14.4 modems prevailed, some clever web designers began masking every other horizontal line in an image to maximize LZW compression and minimize bandwidth. This technique of masking images with evenly spaced horizontal lines is know as CRLI compression (www.inforhiway.com/faster/crli.html).

What started out as a bandwidth-oriented tool had become a stylish design fetish by the late 1990s, as newcomers to the field fell in love with the CRLI “look” without understanding its utilitarian purpose as a tool of bandwidth compression. To designers, stripes were “webby”, and “webby” was cool. As the Web exploded into public consciousness, consumers and ad agencies seemed to agree with this link between “Web” and “cool”. The ever-popular striped effect was soon seen not only all over the Web, but also in print and television.

8 hours

For the past few days my sleep patterns are so screwed. Yes i do have 8 hours of sleep everyday, but its 4 hours at night and 4 hours in the afternoon. I so need to switch back.

I just got one more major assignment left which is due next monday, can’t wait for the liberation.

Freedom

The events in the world have started me to re-think the concept of freedom. Does freedom belong to everyone?

Freedom comes to me as a social responsibility, cuz I think we gotta be responsible for our actions and make sure that what ever that we do in the name of freedom would not oppress the freedom of others, else wouldn’t that be so hypocritical and ironical?

I believe freedom comes at a cost, if you support freedom of speech, then don’t bitch about people hurling abuses at you. If you support the freedom to posses weapons, then don’t complain when your 7 year old daughter is killed in a playground by a lunatic having fun in a random drive pass spray of ammunition.

So if freedom comes at a cost would you be prepared to take up that cost while raving about the importance of freedom? How ready are we? Freedom is so overrated and people are so taking it for granted.
