Welcome to Punggol OCBC Cafe Bike Crawl

And off we go
Group photo before we start

So happy that this year’s OCBC Cycle’s Cafe Bike Crawl decided to come to Punggol as some may know I’m like Punggol Ambassador at large. lol. Last year I joined them at east coast area, but nothing beats home ground. I want to thank Julian Lim from OCBC for re-inviting me.

And off we go
And off we go

I think I missed a memo because I clearly understood it as a leisurely ride, so dressed comfortably in my shirt and shorts. Many came in proper cycling gear which I seriously struggle to do. I mean, you know… its kinda… revealing…

I managed to make a few new friends which was wonderful. Steve Lai from CNA, Yong Wei, Alvin Chia from ST Sports, Pris Chew, Zi Hao from OCBC and a few others.

Toast Box Breakfast
Toast Box Breakfast

First stop. Toast Box at Punggol Waterway Point. Eggs, Toast, Teh-C and new friends is the perfect way to start a Saturday. The table I sat had 2 people from the news business. Steve Lai from CNA and Alvin Chia from ST Sports, super interesting mix. We talked about Brunei and many other random stuff under the sun. Yong Wei was also at my table and he shared with us his gifts and premiums fabrication business.

I had quite a bit of chat with Steve as he is from CNA and since VML where I work at is currently revamping CNA’s website, it was great talking about the future of the news publishing business with him. He told me he is going to Manila to cover the elections, so do follow him on his twitter @SteveLaiCNA to keep up to date.

Sunset Bridge at Punggol Waterway

We cycled from the east side of Punggol all the way to the West side and I shared with all that this is the Sunset Bridge. The east side one is called Sunrise Bridge.

Coast Cycle
Coast Cycle

We cycled into Coney Island and Coast Cycle was there with their very garang bikes to let us try. The Quinn was there so was the Juggernaut and other bigger bikes. Super shiok, can jam break, drift drift abit. So fun. Do check out their bikes in their Siglap shop.

Coney Island

Yet another badass group photo. I camped out on the Juggernaut to act garang.

Wayne from Wayne's Chill Out
Wayne from Wayne’s Chill Out

We then headed to Punggol Settlement and rested at Wayne’s Chillout. Wayne shared with us the ice cream flavours he had and the many mix of beverages he had too. Somebody say Lychee Sorbet Iceeee Tea!! Shiok! Especially with the hot weather these days.

Seok Seng

We then cycled and miraculously appeared at Soek Seng 1954 Bike Cafe for lunch. It’s at some super ulu secret location, so I’m not sharing how we got there and where it is. You go try and find yourself.

Uncle Joo from Seok Seng
Uncle Joo from Seok Seng

Uncle Joo shared with us his profession as a car restorer, his passion for restoring vintage bicycles and the many media coverage of his passion. His smile while sharing is really infectious. I think he have arrived. You can have all the money in the world, but living and breathing your passion and sharing it with people who appreciates it is what I call true success.

OCBC Cycle Workshop and Activities
OCBC Cycle Workshop and Activities

So, you too can join the OCBC Cycle Cafe Bike Crawl. Go check out on their site and quickly signup before it is sold out. OCBC have also organised a few other activities around the OCBC Cycle, so do check them out too. And of course, there is the main OCBC Cycle event happening 1 – 2 Oct 2016, so do join the rest of Singapore in this super fun event.

You must be wondering, how come so long post, but no real pictures of people actually cycling? The reason is simple, it is dangerous to take pictures while cycling. So because of this, I SNAPCHAT!!

Follow me on Snapchat “nickpan” (i’m a noob, so be gentle).

3 years of #GoingOut

3 years of GoingOut

Time flies. Its been 3 years already since our very first #GoingOut photo at our lift lobby. It started as a let’s do something fun while we wait for everyone to be ready to go out, then it became a let’s see who is last, then it became a let’s take a different pose, sometimes we are just waiting for the lift, then slowly it became a regular thing.

It’s really nice to see our kids progressively growing up. I can’t imagine how they will look like 10 years from now.

Quite fun to look back on what they wore on different days as it gives a hint on where we were going, also its clear not every day is a happy day. Sometimes someone don’t want to wear a pair of shoes, someone step on someone’s feet, someone have yet to wake up, but the best is when all are in high spirits and I get a good picture.

3 years of nickpan's GoingOut photos

Once I hit 5 years, I think I’m gonna print all of them out, exhibit it somewhere or maybe create a microsite for it. For now, if you wanna have a look, you can see them either on my Instagram or on my public Facebook album.

I’m glad we did this. Pls copy this idea and do it for your kids too starting today. :)

Daddy Matters at OCBC SG50 Home Trial

Getting briefed on the challenges for the day
Getting briefed on the challenges for the day

A few of the Daddy Bloggers from Daddy Matters namely Winston (The Blogfather), Vincent (Roamingglass), Isaiah (J Babies’ Dad) including myself took part in OCBC’s SG50 Home Trial organised by their Home Loans team. It was a good way for us to check out some of the cool Condos in Singapore and also test drive the Volvo XC90.

It was a timely thing as my wife and I have been hoping to upgrade as we feel we needed more space as our 3 daughters are growing up quickly and if possible shift nearer to my mom’s place in Katong. So I was personally looking forward to see more condos and also know more home loans people from the bank.

The day started with a quick briefing to let us know of the “challenges” we need to do. It was a bit like an amazing race type fun thing but each team had different places to go. Instead of trying to win, we wanted to see where we could do fun and “interesting” things. You know when dads come together, magic happens. lolz.

We got a short introduction to the car and I have to say, lots of technology and being such a big car, it was really comfortable. Got SUN ROOF somemore! :)

The car can become a wi-fi hotspot, so of course we tried it out, but first we need to set a “PowerfulPassword”.

Our first destination was D’Leedon Condo designed by the internationally famous and multi award winning Architect Zaha Hadid, she even got the most prestigious “Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004” in her list of awards. I heard so much about this development but did not have the chance to go, now we get a chance to see the PENTHOUSE!

Ok, I missed the turn going into the small street to access the condo, but found this perfect spot to take a good group photo. How, EPIC right this photo. :)

4 dads in a car = super random banter

So we talked lots of nonsense in the car of course, from hoping that the car have a Hokkien + Singlish add on for navigation to testing all the different technologies on the car like its Adaptive Cruising mode. We even used the Sun Roof to wave at our fellow competitors.

Living the life at D'Leedon
Living the life at D’Leedon

I have to say D’Leedon is super chio. Very sci-fi-ish modern. Even the car park feels like a set out from Star Wars. But I have to say the best part of this visit is getting served by my man servants. lolz.

Next stop Reflections at Keppel Bay. When we arrived, our fellow competitor’s car was parked just beside ours, so of course we need to give them a small surprise.

Making a Singapore Sling at Reflections

The challenge at this stop was to make a Singapore Sling (non alcoholic *sigh*). We must more pattern then the badminton and this is our kind of group shot at that stop.

The view of Sinagpore from Sky Habitat
The view of Singapore from Sky Habitat

Last stop was Sky Habitat at Bishan. My wife and I actually went to see the show flat for this development earlier in the year and we really liked it. It’s location, the furnishing, the uniqueness of the terrace concept. Glad I managed to get up there and see an actual unit. The view also quite shiok so have to take a panorama but kena photobomb.

OCBC Home Trail Final Race!

The last station was back at Orchard Gateway and there was an RC race with obstacles where all team faced off. Let’s just say our team managed to finish the race.

It was overall a good fun morning together with other Daddy Bloggers from Daddy Matters. Reflecting on our life stage, the cost of living in Singapore, the desire to provide for our family a better home and of cause lots of shenanigans.

I’m looking forward to our next adventure.

If you need any advice regarding Home Loans, do speak to the people at OCBC and I’m sure they will be able to give you good advice. Just FYI, they don’t offer interest free housing loans, I know, because I checked.

Majulah Singapura

bridesmaid dresses discount sale

What a heavy week.

This week, we mourn the passing of our first Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

My wife and I were glued to the television for the past few days as Mr Lee’s life and contributions unveiled on national television to much detail. We also shared with each other the stories and tributes we have gathered from social media as we have our dinner at home while trying to get our daughters to be interested in black and white speeches.

As the broadcast replayed previous national day rallies, key speeches by Mr Lee, tributes by ministers and the overwhelming outpouring of grief from the population, it’s quite hard to hold back the emotions. This is not just an emotional national event, its something a lot more personal as it felt like we have lost someone really close. This someone worked tirelessly behind the scene with insurmountable external and internal challenges all this while to prepare our Singapore for us even before we were born.

This someone intruded into our lives unapologetically, into my family life, into my life and decided for me that English will be my primary language and that I need to be a bilingual, decided that my teachers need to do a better job, decided that I need to serve the military, decided that so long as I’m employed, I’ll be able to have a roof over my head for my family.

My childhood replayed in my mind again and again as the primitive black and white speeches filled the screen. And with every replay I become more sensitive to the impact Mr Lee had on my life, our lives.

How can a man have such great vision? How can a man have such intellect, such discipline and yet such selfless devotion for his country?

I count myself blessed being born into Singapore.

Mr Lee had a conviction in his younger days. From his experience of cruelty from the war, the discrimination he had as an Asian in a Western University to his belief that we need to govern ourselves after the British could not fend off the Japanese during the Second World War. His conviction led to his life long dedication to Singapore and to us its people.

He laid a world-class infrastructure for Singapore. From economy to education, from security to racial harmony, from greenery to a very useful and much envied passport. He built a second generation of leaders to govern the country as he aged and provided wise council and continued contributing to the nation in whatever capacity he could.

In the past years, the societal questions and discussions that lingered on everyone’s lips were things like the high cost of living, over-crowding, stressful education for the young and even incompetence of some of our leaders. The vocal and unrestrained dissentient individuals on social media spoke out and questioned our leaders and demanded answers, solutions and a better way.

It felt like the Lee Kuan Yew type vision and leadership is slowly fading away and citizens have also criticised that the current leadership might not know how to run a first world country as trains start breaking down every other month. The common sentiment on the street is that Mr Lee and his old guards governed a very different country when we gained independence and their ways worked for that time, but it’s a very different world now in 2015.

I’ve never considered migrating, but in the past few years, this topic of uprooting and going to another country has been discussed with some closer friends who have also started to explore this perspective as our kids struggle academically in school, in this fast paced, competitive and distracted society.

This Sunday, as Mr Lee’s funeral procession leaves the Parliament House and heads for the University Cultural Centre for the funeral service, I’m sure Singaporeans all across Singapore will be overwhelmed with sadness. But at the same time, also be overwhelmed with gratitude and gratefulness for this great man and the foundation he have laid for us.

After Mr Lee’s funeral this Sunday, we will technically be out of the week of mourning and we all go back to our lives.

I really wonder with this week’s unceasing tributes and recognition of Mr Lee’s life long contribution to our exceptional country, what impact will it have on our politicians, what impact will it have on global leaders, but more importantly, what impact will it have on everyone of us that call ourselves Singaporeans.

What will the next 50 years for Singapore look like?

How will we Singaporeans chart our own path?

How will we Singaporeans be part of the Singapore that Mr Lee dedicated his life to?

How will we Singaporeans be part of our Singapore?

Majulah Singapura. Onward Singapore.
